William Herschel described a possible ring around Uranus in 1789. This sighting is generally considered doubtful, as the rings are quite faint, and in the two following centuries none were noted by other observers. Still, Herschel made an accurate description of the epsilon ring’s size, its angle relative to the Earth, its red color, and its apparent changes as Uranus traveled around the Sun. The ring system was definitively discovered on March 10, 1977 by James L. Elliot, Edward W. Dunham, and Douglas J. Mink using the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The discovery was serendipitous; they planned to use the occultation of the star SAO 158687 by Uranus to study the planet’s atmosphere. However, when their observations were analyzed, they found that the star had disappeared briefly from view five times both before and after it disappeared behind the planet. They concluded that there must be a ring system around the planet. Later they detected four additional rings. The rings were directly imaged when Voyager 2 passed Uranus in 1986. Voyager 2 also discovered two additional faint rings bringing the total number to eleven.

Well, let’s look at another widening gap and the causes of that. When I was a boy, the only people who ran marathons were Olympic athletes. If anyone had suggested that ordinary folk like you and me should be running 26 miles, they’d have been told they were crazy. 26 miles was at the very limit of human endurance. The famous footage of British Olympic runner, Jim Peters, on the verge of collapse at the end of his marathon run, would have convinced every one of that. Yet, today, everyone from late teenagers to 8o year old grannies is take part in marathons. There are more really fit people around today than at any time in living memory. Yet we have a national obesity problem. The fit are getting fitter, the fat are getting fatter. Why? Those who are fit and healthy repeat the behaviours that got them fit and healthy in the first place, while obese people also repeat the behavious that got them fat in the first place. Does that mean that the answer to the obesity problem is to persuade fit people to stop being so healthy? The suggestion is mad! We have to get away from this “politically correct” assertion that poverty can be cured by persuading financially successful people to change their behavior. It is all about behavior and until we recognize that fact, the gap will continue to get wider and wider.

The assertion that people from “deprived backgrounds” are being exploited, not only fails to address the real issue, it carries dangerous implications for those of you who are among the less well off. There are 3 of these .

1. By encouraging you to see yourself as a victim, either of your circumstances or of someone else, you are led to believe it is beyond your power to do something about it.
2. You are encouraged to reject the advice of the very people best qualified, by experience, to help you;because you are led to believe that they are not to be trusted.
3. You are led to believe that being well off is a financial condition you should avoid because, if you don’t, you become one of those dreadful sharks of society, the man or woman who has achieved financial freedom and independence.

If you are overweight and you want to do something about it, would you seek the advice of a fitness coach, or someone who’s an 18 stone lump of lard? It’s a daft question isn’t it? Contrary to popular mythology, my contention is that there are large numbers of well off business people who would be only too delighted to coach the less well off to financial well being. So, how many financially deprived people are queuing up to get the advice of those who know how to manage money: to earn and save it?

It’s time they were encouraged to do so.
